Raise private sector wages too, says Sarawak developer group

THE private sector must increase the salaries of their employees in tandem with the federal government giving civil servants a raise, Sarawak Housing Developers Association chairman Datuk Sim Kiang Chiok said.

He said it was high time private sector workers get a salary increment as the cost of living had skyrocketed in Malaysia.

"It is good the federal government is giving such a high pay rise to civil servants soon,” Sim said in a statement.

"However, a situation may arise (in which) prices of goods and services could surge again as civil servants will now have more spending power.

"So the pressure will be on private sector workers. They should also get a pay hike from their employers," Sim said in a statement.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a pay hike of up to 13% for civil servants in his Labour Day speech on May 1.

The Sarawak government will soon whether to hike the pay of the state’s civil servants. – May 3, 2024.
