With 2025’s Karate Kid: Legends, Ralph Macchio returns as Daniel LaRusso. Ever since the franchise’s inception in 1984, Macchio has delivered crisp action stunts and perfectly choreographed fight scenes. However, his martial arts prowess isn’t limited to the big screen. The 63-year-old actor is equally disciplined in real life, looking youthful even four decades after Daniel arrived on our screens. Keen to know how he manages to do so? Let’s dive into the workout routine of Ralph Macchio.
Whether through his appearance in The Karate Kid films or its follow-up Netflix series, Cobra Kai, Ralph Macchio proved that martial arts is the way to live a healthy and active life. Safe to say, for Legends, he left no stone unturned in matching the acrobatic fighting style of his co-star, Jackie Chan. Ralph’s union with Chan’s Mr. Han in Karate Kid: Legends has fans brimming with nostalgia, as the veterans get together to train the next martial arts prodigy, Li Fong, played by Ben Wang.
Amid all the buzz surrounding the film, Ralph’s age-defying physique has caught netizens’ attention. His secret to a healthy life? Sticking to good eating and exercising habits.

He extensively practices martial arts, especially Okinawan karate

Did you know Ralph Macchio has extensively studied Okinawan Gōjū-ryū karate? The discipline, emanating from Japan’s Okinawa, is one of the earliest forms of karate and was the same one that Mr Miyagi taught Daniel in The Karate Kid. In fact, Macchio recently earned a black belt in the martial arts form.
Talking to WWD in May 2025, he said, “I just got my black belt in Okinawan Goju-ryu-style karate, so this is the first movie I’ve done where I was an actual black belt.”
Earlier, in a 2024 conversation with People, Macchio spilt the beans on his workout routine go-tos, stressing one’s never too old for anything. He emphasised how baseline martial arts techniques have helped maintain his muscles, strength, focus, balance and core.
“It’s funny, back in 1980-whatever, I was like, ‘Well, thank God, I don’t have to do this ever again! ‘” Machhio quipped. However, looking back, the actor realises how great it was to have built that skill. “I‘m taking pride in it because at my age right now, this is good. This is really good. And I am prideful of it (sic),” he remarked.

His Cobra Kai training routine: Stretches, cardio and meditation
View this post on Instagram
Did you know there were a whopping 13,788 beats of choreography in the final season of Cobra Kai? In a conversation with Popsugar, the series’ stunt and fight choreography team, featuring Ken Barefield and Don L. Lee, revealed the behind-the-scenes training the cast underwent.
The team trained five days a week, with additional sessions whenever possible. The workout started with a 20-30 minute warmup session, comprising stretches like leg swings, arm circles and torso twists, and cardio activities, including jumping jacks, jogging, or shadowboxing.
The cast was trained exactly as one does in a traditional dojo (a training place for martial arts). The idea was to coach the actors in “punches, kicks and footwork patterns” that helped them get into the right mindset and build muscle memory. Competitive drills were arranged by the team, where the cast would challenge each other to action-packed duels.
At last, they would focus on their breathwork and meditation techniques to recover after high-energy scenes.
All of these also contributed to the intense workout routine of Ralph Macchio to keep him in shape at his age.

Macchio also recommends everyone to ‘keep moving’

While the actor admits that staying in shape and delivering stunts was very easy in his 20s, doing the same in his 60s is no piece of cake. As such, he advises everyone to keep moving regardless of age.
According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, he emphasised that stretching is key to preventing injuries as you grow older. He focuses on a lot of strength work, while also incorporating sports like tennis, softball, or other cardio activities into his routine. “You have to make it fun. The key is not to overdo it,” he said.
Veggies, protein, whole grains: What Ralph Macchio’s diet comprises

A great workout routine doesn’t reap results if not complemented by a clean diet. For the My Cousin Vinny star, this looks like meals comprising veggies, fruits, whole grains, protein and fibre. Talking to sports publication Stack in a 2014 interview, the actor said, “I make sure to get my fruits and veggies, protein, whole grains and fibre. I try to focus on portion control as much as I can.”
Moreover, Macchio added that he spaces out his meals throughout the day, especially to avoid mindless snacking. His tip: don’t eat in front of the television post-dinner, as it only results in ingesting unnecessary calories.
