Former Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has opened up on the reasons he did not move to Manchester United.

The 37-year-old is back at boyhood club Sevilla, having left Paris Saint-Germain in the summer.

Ramos did have a chance back in 2015 to move to United on a big money contract.

Per The Mirror, Ramos said: "I stayed where I should have stayed, Real Madrid, but was indeed close to playing for United [in 2015]."

He continued: "It was not to be, but I do keep that admiration for the club, to the Premier League and the players, because the rhythm of play and the pace is different. It's a league we can learn a great deal from.

"That was not meant to be. I was glad to stay in Madrid and now I'm glad to be in Sevilla."

On going back, Ramos added: "This was a debt I had to my club, the first team where I triumphed. This is also a personal debt to my family, my parents and my grandparents.

"This is a very personal decision, a decision made with the heart. It was the ideal time to do it, and I never thought about the option of going anywhere else when the opportunity of coming back here came up."
