Commuters in Kuala Lumpur may soon be able to enter trains and buses simply by tapping their credit cards, as Prasarana Malaysia moves closer to introducing an open payment system across its network.
Prasarana plans major upgrade for public transport users

According to Prasarana, the project is currently in the “award stage”, with final discussions underway before implementation begins. Once launched, passengers on Rapid KL services could use bank cards directly at fare gates and terminals without needing a separate transit card.
The new system is expected to make commuting more convenient, especially for occasional riders, tourists, and users who frequently forget to reload their transit cards.
The payment upgrade is expected to cover multiple Rapid KL services operated by Prasarana Malaysia, including:
- MRT
- LRT
- Monorail
- Rapid KL buses
Other cashless payment options such as debit cards, QR codes, mobile wallets (e.g. Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay) for buses and trains in Kuala Lumpur will be able in the future too.
Full rollout could take up to 30 months

Prasarana said the open payment system will be introduced in phases once the project is officially awarded, with full implementation expected within 30 months for rail services and 15 months for bus services in the Klang Valley.
The new system will support multiple payment methods, including credit cards, debit cards, QR payments, and NFC technology.
The timeline for Rapid KL On-Demand (ROD) services may differ depending on future business priorities and operational plans.
