The Nuzul al-Quran Day 2026 in Malaysia falls on Saturday, 7 March 2026, corresponding to 17 Ramadan 1447 Hijrah. As such, for every 17th day of Ramadan, Muslims commemorate the revelation of the Quran with various programs such as Quran recitation (tadarus), religious lectures, and knowledge forums led by scholars & gurus held at the mosques, suraus or homes. The observance is revived in connection of Muslims with their holy book, the Quran.

According to JAKIM (Department of Islamic Development Malaysia), the word “Nurul” originates from Arabic, meaning “to descent". Thus, “Nuzul al-Quran refers to the event of the 1st revelation descending from Allah the Almighty (SWT) to Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (SAW) through the Angel Jibreel. The Quran is the holy book of Muslims & serves as the primary source of reference in all aspects of life, including faith, worship & social system."

Concurrently, Muslims are encouraged to search for Laylatul Qadr, or the “Night of Power”, that is the holiest night in Islam, marking when the Quran was first revealed to Prophet Muhammad SAW. It is believed occurring during the last ten odd nights of Ramadan, which is considered better than the 1,000 months of worship. It is a time for intense prayers, forgiveness, and seeking blessings, as angels descend to earth, acting as a guide & mercy for humanity.

I can still remember the practice of searching for Laylatul Qadr in my village is deeply rooted in tradition, and intense devotion, that focusing on the last 10 days of Ramadan. Many the men stay and pray at the mosques, or hold family-led prayers in their homes, creating a spiritual atmosphere throughout our home and village. The elderly (now including me) look for signs of the special night, such as a feeling of tranquility, and a cool, pleasant, or windless night.

In essence, searching Laylatul Qadr during Ramadan is a communal, sincere & humbled effort to gain divine mercy together in prayers and contemplation.
