RE firm completes first sea-crossing power line

ALTERNERGY Holdings Corp. has completed an overhead power line across the sea that will connect its 64-megawatt (MW) Alabat wind project in Quezon province to the Luzon mainland.

The company said on Tuesday that the facility is the first overhead sea crossing in the Philippines built for a wind power project.

The 1.4-kilometer crossing carries electricity through power lines suspended above the water, allowing the island wind farm to connect to the mainland grid. It forms part of the project’s 37-kilometer, 69-kilovolt transmission line.

The sea crossing required two 100-meter-tall and two 45-meter-tall lattice towers. The broader transmission line includes 483 poles.

The route links the wind farm on Alabat Island to a connection point along the Gumaca–Lopez (Hondagua) transmission line of National Grid Corp. of the Philippines (NGCP), the country’s power grid operator.

“Developing a wind project on an island requires more than building the generating facility itself. It also means creating the infrastructure needed to deliver clean power to consumers,” Alternergy President Gerry Magbanua said.

The Alabat wind project is expected to be completed this year-end, the company said.

Alternergy is a listed renewable energy company with interests in wind, solar, run-of-river hydropower, and battery storage projects. It was founded by a team led by former Energy Secretary Vicente Pérez Jr. and listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange in 2023.

Alternergy shares fell by P0.01 to P0.63 apiece on Tuesday.
