Stamatis Moraitis was a Greek-American man who was diagnosed with lung cancer in the United States in 1976 and was given only nine months to live.

However, he managed to survive for another 45 years after moving back to his home island of Ikaria in Greece.

Ikaria is a “blue zone”, an area with an unusually high life expectancy, where people live on average ten years longer than in other parts of Western Europe.

The purpose of this story is to learn what type of life we have to lead to stay healthy.

Here's are the differences of the life led by Stamatis in Ikaria and in America.

1. Diet:

Ikaria: In Ikaria where Stomatis returned to, the Mediterranean diet is a way of life.

It is a diet that emphasises the consumption of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, nuts, and seeds, with olive oil as the primary source of fat .

The Mediterranean diet has been shown to reduce the risk of heart disease, slow down cognitive decline, help with weight loss, and prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.

America: Conversely, the American diet is often characterized by processed foods, high sugar, and unhealthy fats, which can contribute to chronic health issues and a compromised immune system.

2. Stress and Lifestyle:

Ikaria: Life on Ikaria revolves around a laid-back, stress-free lifestyle. Community bonds are strong, fostering a sense of belonging and support, reducing stress levels.

It is very common for the people of Ikaria to spend their evening singing and dancing in a group.

The Ikariotikos dance is a traditional dance that is performed at festivals and events throughout the year .

Dancing is a form of exercise that can help reduce stress and increase the production of endorphins, which are feel-good hormones.

America: The fast-paced lifestyle in the U.S., especially in cities like New York where Moraitis lived, is often associated with high stress, hectic schedules, and a lack of strong community ties.

3. Environment and Social Structure:

Ikaria: The close-knit community and emphasis on interpersonal relationships promote mental well-being, creating a supportive environment for individuals facing health challenges.

America: Social structures in the U.S. can sometimes lack the tight communal fabric found in places like Ikaria, leading to feelings of isolation and stress, which can impact health outcomes.

4. Healthcare Approach:

Ikaria: Moraitis opted for a more holistic approach to healing upon returning to Ikaria, relying on natural remedies, lifestyle changes, and the support of his community rather than aggressive medical interventions.

America: In the U.S., the medical approach often leans toward aggressive treatments, which might have been the initial recommendation for Moraitis upon receiving his diagnosis.

Stamatis Moraitis' incredible journey teaches us that by embracing a wholesome diet, reducing stress, fostering strong community ties, and adopting a holistic approach to healing, we can potentially defy odds and positively influence our well-being.

His ability to live far beyond expectations despite being given only nine months to live exemplifies how our choices and environments can shape our health outcomes.
