Real Madrid president Florentino Perez insists they never competed for Erling Haaland's transfer.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker's move to Manchester City was formally announced this week.

Perez told El Chiringuito: "The agreement with (Kylian) Mbappé did not create any problems for a possible Haaland agreement, absolutely not. We have (Karim) Benzema, so it was impossible to have him with Karim. We can not pick up Haaland to let him sit on the bench.

"Haaland is an incredible, fantastic player. But we have the world's best No9. A buyout clause in two years? I do not know. We have no interest now other than to build our new team with the young people we have and some reinforcements."
