Real Madrid veteran Luka Modric feels he deserves a new contract.
Modric has yet to sign a contract extension with the defending Champions League winners, although many expect the matter to be little more than a formality.
"I haven't spoken to the club about a renewal, just like last year at this stage," Modric explained in his pre-match Champions League press conference.
"These questions are a bit boring because I always say the same thing: that I feel good and I want to continue at Real Madrid.
"I have to talk with the club, I want to continue because I deserve to, not because it's a gift. I've never been given anything for free."
Modric's own future at international level with the Croatian national team was also a topic of discussion on Monday, although the midfielder made clear he has further business to complete with his international compatriots.
"After the World Cup my plan was to continue until the Nations League," he added.
"After that I haven't thought more about it. I haven't decided yet. I want to finish the Nations League and then I'll see.
"Real Madrid has never asked me to retire from the national team, that's not the club's style, to give an ultimatum."
