Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino says they pushed Roma all the way for Thursday's Europa League draw.

A 0-0 draw at La Reale stadium saw Roma reach the quarterfinals 2-0 on aggregate.

Merino said, "I think we just missed putting our chances away. We played really well over the two matches but the details count and tonight they weren't on our side. However we really competed.

"Sometimes we say that 'the ball didn't want to go in' and that was the case tonight. A couple of times you can't explain why it didn't go in! We put everything out on the pitch tonight. I don't know if you call it luck or precision we lacked. But I'm proud of the fans and grateful to them because they were really behind us.

"You can see that we are getting closer and closer every single year. We learn a little bit every single campaign and for the next time we are in this situation we'll be even closer to qualifying than we were tonight. But, for now, we can be proud of the journey."
