Working after retirement is one of the fastest-growing trends in the Malaysian workplace. A random findings from Malaysia Airlines Retirees Association (MASRA) showed that many members had performed part-time work as advisers or consultants or university professors or free lance trainers during their retirement. The last thing they want to do is the same work they've been doing all their life. In a word, they're looking to REWIRE, to channel their energy & experience into work situations that are financially and personally rewarding: whether it's a part-time job, volunteer work, second or third career or offering expertise for national service. According to President of MASRA, Haji Shulhameed Marican, the problem is they wanted to determine what kind of work suits their interests, expertise and experiences. (shulhameedmarican7@yahoo.com)
One case in point is CPA S. Suppiah, former Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Executive Vice President Group Finance who retired at the age of 58 years old in 2000 after 27 good years service. Immediately upon retirement for 2 years he provided advice on aviation related matters to a new start-up budget airline project in Hyderabad, India. Following which he also advised the national carrier, Royal Air Cambodge in Phnom Penh. From 2003 to 2016, he had provided advice on airlines financial matters to Penerbangan Malaysia Berhad, Deleum Berhad Malaysia, GMR India, and Air Mandalay Myanmar. Currently, he is leading a team of retired professionals to write, edit and publish a book about MAS Golden Era.
Another best case in point is Engineer N. Sitham, former MAS Deputy Director of Engineering that upon retirement joined the Australian consulting group of Asia-Pacific Aviation to turn around the Delhi based Sahara Airlines which was not performing well. His team did a great job in turning the airline around including preparing it for long haul globally. Chairman of Jet Airways, offered him the job as Head of Engineering & Maintenance Division. His 3-year job contract with the company ended being in Mumbai for 12 good years.
