POLICE have blamed reckless and excessive-speed driving by the drivers of two luxury vehicles for a devastating crash that killed a family of four and injured several others in Johor, prompting the arrest of one of the motorists involved.
Investigators said a BMW 530e driven by 22-year-old Goh Yi Sheng, and a Mercedes-Benz A250 driven by his 19-year-old brother, were travelling at high speeds and in a dangerous manner along Jalan Renggam-Kluang before tragedy struck on Sunday afternoon.
Kluang district police chief Assistant Commissioner Bahrin Mohd Noh said police received a report of the collision at 1.15 pm, involving five vehicles.
“Police received a report of the accident at 1.15 pm involving five vehicles. Investigations found that the BMW 530e lost control and entered the opposite lane before colliding with four vehicles.
“The BMW 530e crashed into a Perodua Alza, Toyota Vios, and Proton Wira travelling in the opposite direction. He also crashed into the Mercedes driven by his brother. After colliding with the vehicles, the BMW 530e veered off the road and plunged into a ravine on the opposite side.
“As a result of the collision, the Toyota Vios driver, a 36-year-old man, and his 33-year-old wife died. Also killed were a 73-year-old woman and a 10-year-old girl.
“All of them died from severe head and bodily injuries,” he said in a statement.
The four victims, believed to be members of the same family travelling in the Toyota Vios, died at the scene from serious injuries sustained in the impact.
The driver of the BMW later succumbed to his injuries while being taken to the hospital for treatment, bringing the death toll to five.
Several other motorists and passengers survived but suffered injuries of varying severity.
Bahrin said two children travelling in the Perodua Alza, an 11-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl, sustained head injuries and are receiving treatment at Hospital Enche’ Besar Hajjah Khalsom in Kluang.
“The driver, a 43-year-old man, suffered leg injuries. The Proton Wira driver, a 22-year-old man, sustained injuries to his mouth, while a 57-year-old woman, who was driving the Mercedes-Benz, suffered minor injuries.
“All injured victims are receiving treatment at the same hospital, with the case being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987,” he said.
Police have since detained the 19-year-old driver of the Mercedes-Benz A250 and seized the vehicle as part of the ongoing investigation.
“Urine screening tests found the suspect negative for prohibited substances, and an application for remand will be made today under Section 42(1) of the same Act for reckless driving that endangered other road users.
“Members of the public with information regarding this accident are requested to contact the nearest police station or the Kluang District Police Headquarters,” he said.
The crash has reignited concerns over dangerous driving among young motorists and the growing number of fatal collisions linked to excessive speed on Malaysian roads.
Police are continuing investigations into the circumstances leading up to the collision and have appealed for witnesses or dashboard camera footage that may assist the inquiry. - June 2, 2026
