Reckless e-Hailing driver arrested after running red light and nearly hitting pedestrian in KL

A 42-YEAR-OLD e-hailing driver has been arrested after a viral video captured him running a red light and narrowly missing a pedestrian in central Kuala Lumpur.

The incident, which took place near Dataran Merdeka at the Jalan Sultan Hishamudin pedestrian crossing, occurred on Tuesday and was widely circulated on TikTok in a 32-second video clip.

Kuala Lumpur Deputy Police Chief, Datuk Mohamed Usuf Jan Mohamad, confirmed the arrest, stating that the suspect was detained at 8.15am on Wednesday following the emergence of the video.

“The driver of a Perodua Bezza was found to have run the red light at the junction from Jalan Kinabalu towards Jalan Raja, near Dataran Merdeka,” he said. “As a result, the car nearly struck a female pedestrian who was crossing at the designated crossing.”

The video shows the pedestrian, visibly startled, dropping her belongings as the vehicle speeds past inches from her. Fortunately, she was not injured.

The suspect is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving.

Police are appealing to the public for further information regarding the incident. “Anyone with relevant details is urged to contact the Kuala Lumpur Police Hotline at 03-2115 9999, or the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) Operations Room at 03-2026 0267 or 0269, or to visit the nearest police station,” Mohamed Usuf added.

The case has once again drawn public attention to the dangers posed by reckless drivers in high-traffic pedestrian zones in the city centre. - September 25, 2025
