During the second day of the current Parliament, our PM10 allegedly got his facts wrong, prompting lawyer Rafique Rashid to say: "Mr Prime Minister, please get the facts right."
Rafique openly challenged Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement on the royal pardon granted by Sultan Muhammad V during his time as Yang di-Pertuan Agong in 2018.
Rafique Rashid, who shared a copy of Anwar's order for immediate pardon and release with the press, claimed that the then PKR president had applied for a pardon twice, once in 2015 and another in 2017, but were rejected by the Pardons Board on both occasions.
Rafique Rashid was merely responding to the prime minister's remarks in the Dewan Rakyat when Anwar said he had never applied for a royal pardon.
According to the document shared by Rafique, the Pardons Board meeting for the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur, Labuan and Putrajaya on March 16, 2015 and Feb 27, 2017 had considered the appeal and the facts of the case but eventually advised that Anwar's five-year prison term be continued.
To avoid such misleading information being circulated, I recommend that we launch a Fact Checker Monitor for PM10 be installed to avoid the spread of false information and untruths.
As a case study, consider the initiative by The Washington Post Fact Checker team. The team recorded 492 suspect claims in the first 100 days of his presidency. By the end of his term, Trump had accumulated 30,573 untruths during his presidency — averaging about 21 erroneous claims a day.
We do not expect Anwar to be like Trump nor do we want him to go down the same road. But just to keep him on the straight and narrow path. From now on, everyday we shall monitor PM10's statements and check the facts available on the worldwide website.
It's just our way to show that the PH government led by PM10 is honest and credible as they ought to be.
