Malaysian tech reviews, unboxings, and guides. Simplifying tech for you.

There are a lot of tech in the market today that we can buy – but one category of product that’s very… Neglected, in my opinion, is the category of mid-range tablets. There are only a few that’s released within the whole year – and today, we have the Redmi Pad 2 Pro. It’s a rather decent tablet, so let me run you through what you can expect from this tablet in this review

Performance

We’ll start off with the performance. It comes with the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 chip set that was released not too long ago, and the performance is actually quite decent, I’d say. When we did our gaming test, we found out that the performance is quite decent for Genshin Impact at the low graphical preset, not the lowest – and that runs quite decently. We’re getting around 30-40fps while rnning around the new area, but it does drop to around 20-30fps while we’re in combat. Of course, we can still lower the graphical settings even more to the lowest if we want to.

Then moving on to Zenless Zone Zero, it’s going to drop below 30fps constantly when in the flower boss fight even at the lowest graphical settings. That’s because the render resolution is very high.

The same thing happens on Wuthering Waves too. Even at the lowest graphical settings, the nest fights can dip down to below 20fps, and that’s because of the render resolution.

So, what’s the solution? Unfortunately, we don’t have any. The Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 just can’t handle these games at such high render resolution, and hence we’re getting sub-30fps experience throughout. From what I can see, there is no way to reduce the render resolution, so we’re going to get this type of FPS numbers even at the lowest graphical settings, unfortunately.

However, games like COD Mobile is perfectly fine here. And if you want to watch the full gaming test video, then I’ll leave a link down in the description below, and remember to hit that like and subscribe button as that will truly help us out a lot. We’re aiming to hit 100k subs so we can get more devices to bring more gaming tests for you.

Battery life

How about the battery life then? The Redmi Pad 2 Pro comes with a 12,000mAh battery – no idea what’s the Wh value since that information is not published on Xiaomi’s website, and it can last around 15 hours and 43 minutes. Quite good, especially for a tablet of this size.

Charging speed

What’s weird is the lack of a charger in the box. Yeah, I can understand why since fitting a charger in the box wastes a lot of space since there are a lot of padding. So, we’ll have to use our own USB-PD charger and it can charge from 15% to 100% in around 165 minutes – nearly 3 hours?? I suggest you just charge it overnight.

It can also take a maximum of only 27W through USB-PD chargers, and it can take up to 33W using Xiaomi’s own proprietary charger. Not sure how much that’ll improve since we don’t have that charger in the box.

Screen

As for the screen, we have a 12.1-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 2560×1600 pixels – that means 16:10 aspectratio, and also goes up to 120Hz refresh rate. In all honesty, the screen is actually quite good looking.

The maximum brightness that we can get is 575 nits – which is quite good. The color accuracy is also quite decent. The default vivid color profile can cover around 93% of sRGB, and turning it up to the saturated color profile whips up the DCI-P3 color gamut coverage to around 71.7%.

There is also a pretty decently sized bezel that is thin enough to provide a great viewing experience, but also thick enough for my thumb to rest while holding the tablet.

By the way, there is no screen protector applied from the factory. I just want to highlight this in case you’re wondering.

Software

As for the software, it is using Xiaomi’s HyperOS 2 and the features are all that we’ve seen before. It’s serviceable and works well for the Redmi Pad 2 Pro, though Xiaomi really needs to introduce a way to control the render resolution of the games to provide a much better gaming experience.

Design

All of this is housed within this simple tablet body. I think the design is great and does the job well enough. It’s not particularly thick as well, so we can just stuff it in our bags easily.

It might be a bit on the heavy side as the tablet itself is around rated at 610 grams.

Accessories

But, we do have two accessories to talk about. Yes, we have the keyboard and also the stylus as well.

Let’s start with the keyboard first. The keyboard in itself, is a fairly simple accessory. The tablet goes here and all of a sudden, it becomes a laptop alternative. The whole keyboard case is essentially a wireless keyboard with a tablet holder at the top.

The tablet only has one angle to be propped up, and we have to turn the keyboard on or off, then pair it with the tablet via Bluetooth.

The keyboard itself has pretty good travel distance for each key, though it does feel like I’m slamming on the table when I’m typing a bit faster. Otherwise, the keyboard works well.

As for the stylus, it’s officially called the Redmi Smart Pen. It’s an active stylus that need to be charged via the USB-C port, and then paired to the tablet via Bluetooth. The stylus offers low-latency and also 4096 levels of pressure, which actually makes it a really good option for those who are looking for an affordable option to draw and write on the tablet.

In the settings menu, we do have some customizations that can be done to the stylus’s two buttons and also update the firmware, while the keyboard shortcuts can be customized as well.

When we combine these two accessories together, the stylus goes through this little loop at the top of the tablet.

A few more things to mention

And a few more things to mention about the Redmi Pad 2 Pro. It has a USB 2 port at the bottom, so no display output via that port – and it also has a microSD card slot. There is another 5G version that makes use of that SIM card slot as well.

Oh – we also have an audio jack, which is a really nice thing to see.

Should you buy the Redmi Pad 2 Pro?

So, should you buy this Redmi Pad 2 Pro? Looking at the price, it starts at RM1,099 right now for the WiFi version but it’s at 128GB. I highly recommend to get at least 256GB, so the price will rise up to RM1,399. If you want the 5G version, then it’s at RM1,799. Yes, the price rises quite fast. I think the tablet itself is quite decent, though once again – we need a way to lower the game’s render resolution. Otherwise, games like Genshin Impact, Wuthering Waves, and Zenless Zone Zero will run quite terribly.

If you want the accessories alongside, then they’re currently going for RM199 each right now if you get the PWP option. Otherwise, the keyboard will be at a staggering RM399. I think the stylus is worth it if you want to draw on this tablet.
