Kuala Lumpur: Hundreds of people gathered outside Masjid Jamek in Kampung Baru this afternoon despite organisers earlier declaring that the planned “Selamatkan Malaysia” rally had been “cancelled”.
After Zohor prayers, PAS Youth information chief Nazir Helmi told the crowd of protesters that they would be marching to the Dang Wangi district police headquarters (IPD) where a report would be lodged.
“This is not a march. We are just going to escort the organisers to ensure there is no provocation,” he told the crowd outside Masjid Jamek before embarking on the 2km march.
The large crowd which had gathered in Kampung Baru were heard chanting “Dakwa Zahid” and “Reformati”.

“I will make a report and urge (deputy prime minister) Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to be charged again. (This government) promised to imprison Zahid, but now they have released him,” the Bersatu man said.
The group said its demands include making the attorney-general’s chambers (AGC) and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) independent from executive powers and calling for fairer laws for all Malaysians.

While the duo and other members of the organising committee headed to the IPD, the larger group stopped outside the Sogo shopping mall along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman, where more protesters joined the gathering despite the heavy police presence.
Members from Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (Gamis) then took turns to speak to the large crowd.
Yesterday, police said it rejected the application submitted on the Sept 16 “Selamatkan Malaysia” rally as the information provided was incomplete and did not meet the requirements under the Peaceful Assembly Act.
Bukit Aman criminal investigation department chief Shuhaily Zain said among the details missing were the organisers’ name(s) as well as the proposed venue for the rally.
Perikatan Nasional Youth previously said it would hold a Malaysia Day protest over Zahid’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA) in his Yayasan Akalbudi corruption case.
