SANDAKAN: The direction of the Malaysian Volunteer Corps Department (Rela) is now becoming clearer: creating a wave of volunteers involving all layers of the community regardless of race or creed.
Sandakan MP Vivian Wong said Rela members are also held in high esteem by the government leadership because of the efforts and services they have provided.
“Currently, Rela plays many roles in community service such as mutual aid, blood donation programmes, home improvement services and many more.
“This volunteering activity is very important, with volunteering activities we can help various levels of society.

Vivian said this when officiating the 2024 Sandakan District Rela Basic Course at the Rela Office, recently.
The course was held to provide basic knowledge and understanding of Rela’s functions and responsibilities to improve on self-appearance, disciplinary qualities, good values, self-identity and a positive attitude.
The course was also held to instil the spirit of camaraderie, professionalism and love for the country.
Vivian said the number of voluntary control services is increasing, not only for taking care of certain events but also now that Rela provides security services for government premises.
Among the government premises guarded by Rela in Sandakan are the Duchess of Kent Sandakan Hospital, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (APMM), Road Transport Department (JPJ), Satellite Prison and many more.
“Not only that, but Rela also has a role in maintaining security in the Esszone area. In Sandakan there are two areas guarded by Rela, namely in Gum-Gum and Batu Putih.
“Rela is also on duty in Community Patrols with the Police. Their job is also to ensure security in the areas they patrol,” she said.
Vivian hopes Rela can expand their patrol areas in order to reduce illegal activities in all areas and further increase the sense of security within the community.
