TAWAU: The issue of relocating kuih (traditional cakes) and pork traders at Tawau Tanjung Market following a market renovation project has finally been resolved amicably after a dialogue session was held with the parties concerned.
It is understood that the matter had previously sparked objections from the affected traders, who claimed they had not received any written notice but were only verbally told to move as the area would be converted into a clinic.
“Most traders initially did not have detailed information on the matter. However, after the dialogue session, a consensus was reached and the issue was resolved amicably,” said Sri Tanjong Assemblyman Justin Wong.
According to him, the traders affected by the relocation had earlier not fully understood the details, which led to their objections.
He said the discussion was attended by the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) engineer, market management, council enforcement officers, clinic representatives as well as the traders’ association chairman.
Justin hoped the new site to be provided for the affected traders would be equipped with basic infrastructure to ensure they can continue their livelihood while offering greater comfort to consumers.
He said the large-scale renovation project at Tawau Tanjung Market would not only benefit traders by allowing them to enjoy a better business environment but also bring good news to the wider community.
“I fully support this effort, but I emphasise that the new site for the kuih and pork traders must be equipped with basic facilities such as proper ventilation systems and convenient access routes, to meet the needs of both traders and consumers,” he said.
