Remains of 800-year-old castle found beneath Chester Crown Court

  • Archaeologists have uncovered an 800-year-old section of a medieval castle wall hidden beneath Chester Crown Court.
  • The discovery was made by Dr Stewart Ainsworth, who used his smartphone light to identify an abrupt change in masonry within a dark corridor.
  • Researchers grew certain of the wall's medieval origin, indicating it survived later 18th-century construction of the court complex.
  • The substantial wall, nearly three metres high, is believed to be part of a bridge that once cut across a deep ditch surrounding the castle's inner ward.
  • Jonathan Lightfoot, Cheshire Constabulary’s PC, said: “This just shows we can now safeguard this bit of history so we can learn from it for future generations.”
