Three men remain in custody as police extend remand in an assault case that left three officers injured during a confrontation in George Town
GEORGE TOWN: The remand period for three men detained over an alleged assault on police officers has been extended by three days.
Penang police chief Datuk Azizee Ismail said the three local men, all in their 30s, will be held until March 30 to assist with the ongoing investigation.
Five other men, previously remanded for three days in connection with the same incident, were released on police bail.
Azizee confirmed that police are continuing their probe and are in the process of completing the investigation papers.
The incident occurred when a police team on enforcement duty at an apartment sought backup.
This followed a pursuit of a suspicious individual who fled into the residential area, which led to a misunderstanding with members of the public.
A scuffle ensued, resulting in three of the four police personnel sustaining minor injuries.
Police subsequently arrested eight local men, aged between 28 and 39, to assist investigations.
They are being investigated under Sections 147 and 353 of the Penal Code for rioting and using criminal force against public servants.
