Visiting the new Headquarters of Permodalan Nasional Berhad (PNB) at Level 90, Menara Merdeka Maybank 118, Kuala Lumpur reminded my regular consultations with its former Chairman, the late Tun Ahmad Sarji Abdul Hamid at previous PNB Head Office at Jalan Tun Razak. He served AIM as a distinguished Member of AIM Board of Governors, succeeding the founding PNB Chairman Allahyarham Tun Ismail Ali. Al-fatihah (read). May their soul rest in peace. I was the President of Kelab AIM Malaysia and double-up as Chairman of Federation of AIM Alumni Associations (FAIM). I had accompanied the former AIM Chairman, and legendary Principal owner of SGV & Co Partners, Manila, the late Washington Z. SyCip, and AIM President, the late Felipe Alfonso, every time they had meetings with Tun Ahmad Sarji. In reciprocal every February-March of the year, Tun Sarji would visit Manila to attend the annual AIM Board of Governors meetings in conjunction with AIM alumni homecoming celebrations. Tun had always been gracious to present keynote address at FAIM leadership seminars and Asia Business Conferences (ABC) in Manila, Jakarta, Singapore & KL. (www.aim.edu.ph)
I can still remember at ABC Manila, Tun Ahmad Sarji argues strenuously that “All of us should think and act more as Asians, in the same way the French and Germans are identifying themselves as Europeans.” He goes on to observe the rapid increase in intra-Asian trade, before listing down what he considers to have been "The key factors in the success of the economic ‘tigers’ in Asia-Pacific region. Asian family values should be stressed, and saving should be encouraged. Europe is eliminating borders between countries. Hopefully, one day we in Asia may also see a borderless region."
I observed the new PNB President & Group Chief Executive, Datuk Rizal Rickman Ramli, anchored on the theme “Braving Beyond Horizons”, reinforcing PNB's role as a catalyst for purposeful, long-term investment. PNB continues to advance forward-looking strategies, deepen global collaborations & shape resilient investment pathways, creating sustainable value for Malaysia & beyond.
