Reflecting on the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal collapse that occurred on July 31, 1988, unveils a poignant narrative of the repercussions of inadequate safety measures and infrastructure planning. Even after 36 years, the memory of this tragic event continues to serve as a sombre reminder of the far-reaching consequences it had on the healthcare staff, emergency response teams, and the survivors who endured its harrowing aftermath.
The catastrophic collapse of the wooden platform at the ferry terminal was precipitated by an unexpected surge of visitors flocking to the State to partake in two simultaneous celebrations: the St. Anne's Feast in Bukit Mertajam and the Kwan Yin Goddess festival that occurs once every 60 years. The resultant overcrowding proved to be a fatal combination, culminating in the structural failure that marked a dark chapter in the history of the Penang Ferry Service. The toll was staggering, with 32 lives lost and 1,634 individuals left grappling with injuries of varying degrees of severity.
In the wake of the tragedy, the scene that unfolded was one of chaos and despair. Severely injured victims were swiftly evacuated to the General Hospital in Penang via airlift, while countless others found themselves at Hospital Bukit Mertajam, devoid of any personal identification and reeling from a maelstrom of shock, confusion, and agony. The Emergency Department, inundated by the influx of casualties sent the patients directly to the Wards for immediate medical attention with admission forms unfilled. Most of the patients came with physical injuries and fractures sustained from the fall.

Recollections of that fateful day paint a vivid picture of an unparalleled medical emergency characterized by uncertainty and overwhelming adversity, as no one really knew what to do. The 60-bedded Female Surgical Ward 4 where we worked, quickly swelled to accommodate 280 patients prompting the makeshift utilization of additional spaces in the Female Gynae and Maternity Wards. Resourcefulness became the order of the day as we scrambled to procure extra beds and trolleys, even compelling some patients to share their beds. The ensuing 48 hours bore witness to a relentless flurry of activity as patients were shuttled one after another for X Rays, diagnostics test and rushing those with internal injuries to emergency and life-saving surgeries.
Despite being understaffed and under-resourced, the healthcare team at Hospital Bukit Mertajam rose to occasion. Everyone worked tirelessly, without breaks, attending to the patients and assisting the desperate next of kin searching for their loved ones at various hospitals in the area. Patients with fractures were put in plaster casts and discharged home with crutches, those from other states who requested to be transferred were allowed to do so when their condition was more stable.

The dedication, compassion, and resilience shown by the staff at Hospital Bukit Mertajam during this crisis were commendable. Despite the overwhelming circumstances, they worked together to provide the best possible care to those in need. It took nearly three months for the hospital to return to normalcy after the incident, but the memory of the times and the hard work put in by the staff remains vivid for those who experienced it firsthand.
The legacy of the Sultan Abdul Halim Ferry Terminal collapse serves as a poignant testament to the indomitable human spirit in the face of tragedy. Through acts of courage, compassion, and solidarity, the Staff of Hospital Bukit Mertajam rallied together to navigate the aftermath of a calamity that tested the limits of human endurance. Their actions during that challenging time exemplify the true spirit of healthcare professionals who go above and beyond to care for their community.
As I reflect on the events of that tragic day, I am reminded of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones. The memory of the lives lost, and the sacrifices made by those who responded to the tragedy will forever be etched in our hearts and minds.

The tragic incident serves as a solemn reminder of the importance of safety measures and infrastructure planning to prevent such disasters in the future. It also highlights the significance of community gatherings and celebrations, prompting reflection on the impact of overcrowding and the need for proper crowd management.
To the families who lost their loved ones in the tragedy, may they find comfort in the memories left behind. The resilience and unity displayed by the community in the face of adversity stand as a testament to the human spirit's capacity to overcome challenges and come together in times of need. The harrowing event has made me till date avoid large festivities prioritizing safety and preparedness in all community gatherings and festivities.
In current times where people are addicted to instant gratification, I decided to document the untold stories of those unsung heroes. These individuals, through their acts of courage, selflessness, and compassion, may have gone unnoticed. Yet, their contributions have been instrumental in saving lives and providing comfort amidst chaos.
