SANDAKAN: Residents of Kampung Karamunting Baru-Kedai Batu are once again raising the alarm over recurring floods in their area, blaming blocked drains and poor drainage maintenance that have persisted for years.
Warisan Sandakan Deputy Chief Alex TK Wong, who visited the site on Wednesday (April 9), said the situation has become increasingly frustrating for villagers who have had to deal with flash floods and even floods filled with garbage during every rainy season.
“Drainage in the area is completely clogged. Sand, silt and rubbish have blocked the water flow, causing water and garbage to overflow into the residential areas,” he said.
Wong added that while the issue is not new, previous complaints have only led to short-term clean-up works without any long-lasting solutions.
“This has been going on for years. The authorities come, do a bit of cleaning and then leave. There’s no proper fix. It’s just a matter of time before the area floods again,” he said.
He thanked the villagers for their concern and cooperation, saying Warisan will continue pressing for firm action and a proper resolution to protect the well-being of the residents.
