Kota Kinabalu: Api-Api Assemblyman Loi Kok Liang has proposed new alert functions for the GoNet parking platform after raising concerns that motorists are paying unnecessary parking fees and compounds due to missed notifications.
He raised the matter during a recent meeting with GoNet founder and management representatives to discuss improvements to the parking payment experience, here.
Among the proposals were a parking renewal alarm and an instant summons alert feature aimed at helping users avoid unnecessary penalties.
Loi said he frequently receives complaints from motorists who are issued compounds after forgetting to extend their parking sessions while attending to work, meetings, shopping or other commitments.
He also noted that many motorists remain unaware that a compound has already been issued because existing notifications appear only briefly before disappearing automatically.
As a result, some users continue to pay for or renew parking sessions without realising a compound has already been issued.
According to him, because another compound cannot be issued on the same day for the same vehicle at the same parking bay, the additional parking payment becomes unnecessary while the original compound remains payable.
To address the issue, Loi proposed reminder functions that allow continuous alarms or repeated notifications until acknowledged by users.
He suggested notifications similar to smartphone alarm clocks that require manual dismissal.
Loi said such features could help motorists renew their parking sessions on time and avoid unnecessary compounds.
He also proposed that summons notifications remain visible on users’ mobile screens until manually dismissed.
GoNet, a locally developed digital platform, provides parking payment services and other digital services supporting local government initiatives.
As Kota Kinabalu moves towards a cashless parking ecosystem, the platform operates alongside Sabah Smart Parking.
Loi said the GoNet founder and management team welcomed the proposals and agreed to explore the possibility of developing the features.
Preliminary discussions on the technical aspects have also been held, he added.
He noted that concerns regarding existing parking systems have been raised repeatedly by the public.
Loi said motorists would naturally prefer platforms that respond quickly to users’ needs and offer practical solutions.
He added that he would continue gathering public feedback and working with government agencies and private companies to improve urban services through innovation.
