TAWAU: The damaged cement wall at the Jalan Utara Islamic Cemetery, which is about to fall, is being repaired and expected to be completed in two weeks.

Kukusan Assemblywoman Rina Jainal said the renovation work at the main cemetery in Tawau district was carried out by the Tawau Municipal Council (MPT) with allocation from the State Government.

“This construction was carried out last week and is expected to take another two weeks to complete, depending on weather conditions. Cracks are noticeable at major parts of the concrete wall

“I understand the MPT and appointed contractors will do their best to complete the work before school session starts in January,” she said on Thursday.

Rina said the construction would cause temporary traffic disruption because the contractor had to close a route towards the city centre for safety of road users and to facilitate repairs.

Rina, who is also the Political Secretary to the Minister of Finance, hoped motorists would be patient.

Regarding an old tree that was precariously in danger of falling, Rina said MPT had been informed and hoped it would act. She said her office took part in a joint effort to clean the cemetery.

She also planned to hold another gotong-royong in the area next year.
