Around 400 migrants have been rescued off Crete by the Greek coastguard and the EU's border protection agency Frontex in the span of 48 hours, broadcaster ERTNews reported on Thursday.

Greek Migration Minister Thanos Plevris said earlier this month that around 550,000 migrants are waiting in Libya for an opportunity to make the risky crossing to Europe.

Authorities say the calm weather conditions between Libya and the Greek island of Crete are encouraging further crossings. The coastguard says more boats are currently on their way from Libya.

According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, around 42,000 migrants reached the Greek islands by sea last year.

At least 107 people died in the eastern Mediterranean during the same period, according to the agency. However, the real death toll is assumed to be far higher, as many people likely died at sea without being detected.
