THE Ministry of Education Malaysia (MoE) has called on the public to promptly report explicit or immoral content found on social media in order to safeguard schoolchildren from the growing threat of cybercrime.
Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the ministry takes seriously recent media reports highlighting the existence of a paedophilic Facebook group which allegedly featured photos of schoolchildren.
“The existence of social media pages displaying explicit and immoral content must be curbed. They must be reported immediately and dealt with accordingly,” Sinar Harian reported her saying in a statement issued on Friday.
Fadhlina explained that the ministry has already implemented the Reproductive and Social Health Education (PEERS) guidelines to raise awareness on reproductive health among students, educators, and parents.
“The teaching hours for the PEERS module will also be increased under the 2027 School Curriculum to strengthen awareness and education on these matters,” she added.
She said all educational institutions under the MoE are required to adhere to existing guidelines on managing sexual harassment cases.
“Psychosocial support services must also be continuously strengthened to support students,” she said, urging parents to be proactive in educating and protecting their children at home.
“Parents have a responsibility to ensure their children's dignity is safeguarded,” Fadhlina stressed.
The statement follows a news report on a public Facebook group titled ‘Grup Budak-budak Sekolah Rendah’ which sparked widespread outrage after sharing images of young girls in a sexually suggestive context.
The group, however, appeared to have been removed from the platform as of Wednesday evening. - June 13, 2025
