Iran is reportedly taking action against fans who chanted critical slogans and disregarded the national anthem at its team's World Cup match against New Zealand.

The Nour News portal said on Tuesday that several fans have already been identified and case files are being finalised for legal action which will potentially including freezing their assets in Iran.

Justice authorities in Tehran plan similar measures around the team's other group matches against Belgium and Egypt against such "troublemakers."

Monday's match in Los Angeles which ended 2-2 drew supporters and opponents of the Islamic regime, with the current and past flag presented. Several old flags with the lion and sun were confiscated by stewards.

There was also a banner with the writing "42,000#IranMassacre" which appeared to refer to the alleged number of victims in a government crackdown on protests in Iran in January.

Another read "Minab168" which is said to refer to the victims in a girl's school on the first day of United States and Israel air strikes on February 28. A US bomb was reportedly responsible for the incident.

The national anthem was accompanied by audible whistles but the two Iran goals were wildly celebrated.

"I am happy to support the people in Iran here, I don't support the regime," one fan told dpa outside the stadium.

Los Angles has a large community of Iranians in exile.
