Israeli police have discovered a tunnel about 25 metres below ground near a checkpoint in East Jerusalem that was presumably intended for terrorist purposes, the Haaretz newspaper reported on Wednesday, citing security authorities.
It said the tunnel had been dug from the West Bank towards Israeli territory.
Evidence found inside the tunnel led to the arrest of two Palestinian men, the report said.
In the Gaza Strip, the Islamist Hamas militia built an extensive tunnel network that served as a hiding place, a smuggling route for weapons and other material and underground command posts. After the terrorist attack on October 7, 2023, several Israeli hostages abducted to the Gaza Strip were held captive in the tunnels.
Meanwhile, the Israeli military reported that four rocket launchers were destroyed in the Gaza Strip overnight in an Israeli airstrike. It said terrorist groups had built them during the most recent ceasefire.
