KOTA KINABALU: A comprehensive technical report is being prepared to identify the root causes of the recent rockfall incident in Sandakan and to develop long-term mitigation strategies, said Deputy Chief Minister III Datuk Shahelmey Yahya.
He said the Public Works Department (JKR) has activated its Emergency Response Team (ERT) to assess the site and ensure safety of road users.
“We are committed to ensuring safety of the public, particularly in areas affected by rockfalls or landslides.
“Once the report is completed, it will provide an in-depth analysis of the incident and help us implement long-term solutions to avoid similar incidents in the future,” he said.
He said this to reporters at the State-level Aidilfitri open house at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC), Saturday.
Shahelmey, who is also State Works Minister, said initial investigations suggest that weather conditions, particularly continuous heavy rainfall, played a significant role.
“While the weather was a major contributing factor, we want to understand all aspects that led to the incident. This will allow us to take proactive steps moving forward,” he said.
Daily Express reported on Friday that a landslide sent boulders crashing onto Jalan Buli Sim Sim heading towards Taman Grandview, on Thursday (April 3) morning. No untoward incidents were reported.
“The report will not only identify the causes but will also recommend practical solutions such as slope stabilisation and improved monitoring systems.
“We are looking at long-term mitigation measures, including better infrastructure and technology to monitor and prevent these types of incidents,” said Shahelmey.
He urged road users to exercise caution, especially in hilly or landslide-prone areas, as the rainy season continues.
“During this unpredictable weather period, all road users must stay vigilant, especially in areas at risk of landslides or rockfalls. Safety is our top priority,” he said.
He reassured that the State Government remains fully committed to infrastructure safety, with slope stabilisation efforts and continuous monitoring as key priorities.
“Our work is far from over. The Government will continue to focus on infrastructure safety and ensure that we are prepared for any future incidents,” he added.
