Rescuers search for nearly 130 missing people after ferry capsizes in Java Sea

  • Indonesian rescuers are searching for 129 people still missing after a passenger ship capsized in the Java Sea over the weekend.
  • The Virgo Transport 8 was carrying 243 people from East Java to South Kalimantan when it was hit by waves up to three metres high.
  • Six deaths have been confirmed so far, while 108 survivors have been successfully rescued.
  • Search operations involving over 600 personnel, ships, and aircraft are being severely hampered by rough seas and strong winds.
  • Transport officials said that the vessel was not overloaded, as it had a total capacity to carry 500 passengers.
