KUALA LUMPUR, 13 June 2024 - Lim Chun Siong, the founder and managing director of Power Cool Equipments (M) Sdn Bhd, embarked on a journey that would have broken many. His path was marked by adversity, from a robbery and fire to a flash flood. Yet, his story is not one of defeat but of resilience and an unbreakable commitment to his loyal employees. It inspires, showing that success is possible even in the face of the harshest challenges.

Before founding Power Cool Equipments, Lim honed his skills under a supportive mentor who encouraged his entrepreneurial spirit. Despite early success, the 1988 economic crisis and a series of catastrophic events nearly destroyed his business. In 2003, a robbery and two years later, a fire destroyed 70 per cent of the company’s equipment. It’s often said that catastrophe comes in threes. A subsequent flood caused further damage. Despite insufficient insurance coverage, Lim persevered, driven by the thought of his loyal workers who had nowhere else to go.

“My younger sister and I deeply discussed this that year. If I had closed my business then, the 100 foreign workers who left their homes to seek work in our country would have been stranded. We couldn’t bear the thought of that,” he said.

He didn't give up. Instead, he meticulously strategised, restructured, and rebuilt, showcasing his resilience and determination. His strategic steps included a careful relocation to a more strategic location, a thorough streamlining of operations, and a complete revamp of the business model.

Today, Lim operates at Lot 12, RCI Park, Jalan Kesidang 2 in Serendah, Selangor, where his business stands as a shining example of market leadership in refrigerator manufacturing in Malaysia. Specialising in open chillers, chiller freezers, meat freezers, cake showcase chillers, and customised drawer chillers, the company now boasts over 30 years in the industry, with an annual sales turnover of around RM25 million and factories in Sabah, Penang, and Selangor. Throughout these challenges, he also had strong moral support from his wife, family members, suppliers who became friends, and his workers.

The company’s energy-efficient Ai+Inverter technology and eco-conscious manufacturing practices show their dedication to sustainability. Lim's people-oriented business philosophy, emphasising reputation and service, has fostered innovation and long-term growth.

“Sustainability is not just a buzzword for us, it's at the heart of our business. Our Ai+Inverter technology significantly reduces energy consumption, lowering our customers' carbon footprints. We prioritise sustainable practices in manufacturing, such as recycling and waste reduction,” Lim said.

“Always settle all your debts,” was Lim’s advice to any entrepreneur who wanted to follow in his footsteps. He recalled a supplier's unwavering support even after a machine loaned to him was destroyed by the fire.

Lim also believes in treating all his staff fairly, including foreign workers, which has been pivotal to the company's growth. Power Cool Equipments has streamlined operations to focus on refrigerator manufacturing, enhancing product quality and customer service. Lim's commitment to resolving customer issues quickly has built a reputation for reliability.

Looking ahead, the company aims to expand its product line to include smart technology and new markets in Southeast Asia and beyond, focusing on enhancing its after-sales service network.

“Technology is integral to our operations, improving efficiency and customer satisfaction. We plan to adopt energy-efficient manufacturing processes and maintain a comprehensive Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system. We're also exploring integrating the Internet of Things into our products for smarter refrigeration solutions,” he said.

The company's target market includes restaurants, cafes, supermarkets, convenience stores, and food processing units.

“Our products are attractive to environmentally conscious businesses looking to reduce costs and environmental impact. The future of retail is increasingly digital and customer-centric,” he said.

Challenges such as educating the market on inverter technology, fluctuating raw material costs, and rapidly evolving technology are managed through strategic sourcing, supplier relationships, and robust research and development.

“Understand your market and continuously innovate. Leverage technology for efficient operations and focus on sustainability. Build strong relationships with suppliers, customers, and employees. Solve your employees' problems so they can solve yours,” he added.
