A stage 4 cancer patient is determined to overcome her hardships to return to selling homemade cakes, as she strives to build a sustainable livelihood for her family.
Malaysian philanthropist Kuan Chee Heng, affectionately known as Uncle Kentang, took to Facebook to share the woman’s daily struggles. He highlighted the gruelling reality of her living situation: it takes her 45 minutes to climb three flights of stairs to reach her home on the third floor of an Ampang shoplot.
“She has no money to travel to Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL) for her cancer treatments,” Uncle Kentang wrote.
“I visited her yesterday and gave her RM900. Despite having stage 4 cancer, she still bakes cookies at home to sell to friends and supporters. She has a six-year-old son, and her husband earns a modest wage as a kitchen assistant.”
He continued, describing the physical toll of her illness:
“She lives on the third floor. After finishing her chemotherapy sessions, it takes her a full 45 minutes to navigate those stairs.
“It is an immense struggle. She is weak, yet she continues to fight.”
She is determined to get back to business
Before her health declined, the woman sold homemade cakes, which she would pack and stack onto a red trolley before pushing it to nearby banks to meet customers.
“Now, she no longer has the strength to bake cakes. She has shifted to baking cookies, which are much lighter to handle. She never gives up,” Uncle Kentang shared.
“She told me she is certain that, one day, she will overcome her cancer. She looks forward to the day she can once again push that little red trolley to sell her cakes.”
“Her determination is her greatest strength. Let us pray for a miracle. Do you believe in miracles? The doctors are not offering much hope, but we will fight on,” he added.
