Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has called for a collective respect for the decision made by the Pardon’s Board regarding former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak. He urged all parties to refrain from making comments, especially on social media, citing Article 42 (1) of the Federal Constitution, which empowers the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to decide on such matters without the possibility of questioning the decision in court.
Emphasizing the importance of respecting legal processes and institutions, Fahmi cautioned against overreacting in comments, highlighting the potential consequences of violating laws, societal norms, or morals. He pointed out that any overreaction could lead to action being taken by the police or the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Speaking at a press conference after conducting a Cellular Service Quality Test at the Felda Bukit Goh Digital Economy Centre (PEDi), Fahmi stressed the need for careful commentary to avoid touching on sensitive issues such as religion, race, and royalty (3R). He reminded everyone of the significance of maintaining decorum in public discourse.
Responding to inquiries about Umno's reaction to the reduction in Najib’s jail term, Fahmi expressed optimism that party leaders in the Madani government would collaborate to handle the matter. He urged a collective approach to face the situation, emphasizing the importance of explaining the legal process and respecting the boundaries set by the law and the constitution.
The Pardons Board recently announced the reduction of Najib’s prison sentence from 12 years to six years, along with a decrease in the fine from RM210 million to RM50 million. The former prime minister, currently serving his sentence at Kajang Prison, filed a petition for a royal pardon on September 2, 2022.
Highlighting the legal journey that led to Najib's conviction and subsequent appeal, Fahmi stressed the importance of respecting institutions and the constitution. He acknowledged the limited avenues for Najib's freedom, with a royal pardon being the final option.
Additionally, Fahmi urged political leaders, including those within his own party, to engage in self-reflection and exercise caution in making comments that could potentially harm relationships within the Madani government. He specifically addressed a statement by Pasir Gudang Member of Parliament Hassan Karim, cautioning against interference in the affairs of other parties and emphasizing the need for responsible communication to avoid exploitation by other parties.
Fahmi's comprehensive statements underscore the significance of maintaining a balanced and respectful discourse in the face of significant legal decisions, ensuring that public dialogue remains within the boundaries of the law and societal norms.
