Cyber fraudsters allegedly duped a retired medical professor of Government Medical College (GMC) of nearly Rs 6 lakh after luring him through a fake pension scheme advertisement on social media.

The victim, Dr Narinder Singh, said the incident occurred on Friday evening while he was browsing a social media platform on his mobile phone. According to him, a page resembling that of the Bank of India appeared on his screen, displaying information about a pension scheme and health insurance benefits.

Interested in the offer, Dr Singh clicked on the application link, after which he began receiving messages and a phone call from the alleged fraudster. The caller reportedly explained various pension and health insurance plans before asking him to download a mobile application.

After installing the application, the fraudsters allegedly gained access to his confidential banking details and, within minutes, transferred nearly Rs 6 lakh from his bank account into multiple accounts.

Realising that he had been cheated, Dr Singh tried to stop the transactions but was unsuccessful. He later approached the Cyber Cell of the Amritsar Commissionerate Police and lodged a formal complaint.

The retired professor has also requested the bank authorities to freeze his account as well as the accounts into which the money was transferred. Police officials said the matter is under investigation.
