A retired IAS officer died after a fire broke out at a residence in South Delhi’s Hauz Khas area, police said on Thursday.

According to officials, a PCR call regarding the fire at House No. R-15 in Hauz Khas was received at PS Hauz Khas around 11:18 pm on Wednesday.

Police teams and fire services rushed to the spot immediately, and two fire tenders were deployed to control the blaze.

During the incident, two persons were shifted to the hospital. Among them was 80-year-old Dhanender Kumar, a retired IAS officer, who succumbed to smoke inhalation while undergoing treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre. His son, who was also injured in the incident, is currently under treatment and is stated to be out of danger.

Police said that five persons, including family members and domestic help, were present inside the house at the time of the fire.

Preliminary enquiry suggests that the fire was caused by a blast in an AC indoor unit. The Crime Team inspected the scene, while an electrical inspection is currently underway.

Police have recorded statements of eyewitnesses and said that no foul play is suspected at this stage. Further investigation into the incident is in progress.
