Everyone deserves the right to access education and at the same time, the job as an educator is never easy. A retired Malaysian lecturer, however, is doing it for free!
Lee, who retired back in 2014 started his journey to give back to society in 2016 by providing free English workshops to primary school students in rural areas. At the time of writing, Lee has visited over 100 schools. His aim is to encourage students to speak English and to make things easier for the kids. Lee uses simple yet effective methods to make sure the students understand his workshops.
Upon his retirement, he could’ve stopped working but that is just not the idea he has in mind.
“I have the knowledge to teach, so I want to utilise them to the fullest,” Lee told Sin Chew Daily.
His plan did not come easy. When he started his venture, many schools hesitated to accept him as they thought he might be a fraud because his deal sounded too good to be true. It was his constant dedication that convinced the people at all schools who eventually allowed him to conduct his free English workshop, which usually lasts for 2 days.
As his workshops are completely free of charge, money is definitely not something Lee is after but he has only 1 request.
“I only ask for the accommodation for as long as I work at the schools.”
Instead of receiving money, Lee contributed financially to the schools in the hopes that they could upgrade the facilities. As a teacher, Lee has only 1 wish and it’s certainly a huge satisfaction whenever he gets what he wants from the workshops.
“It’s rewarding for me to see the students opening up and willing to try to speak in English after the workshop.”
Lee’s dedication to teaching the students is truly admirable, and when he could be resting during his retirement, he continues to give back to society in terms of knowledge. If you’re an educator, are you willing to follow in Lee’s footsteps in the future?
