Retired oil and gas worker loses RM76,740 in fake investment scheme

A 62-YEAR-OLD retired oil and gas employee has lost RM76,740 to a non-existent investment scheme after being lured through a Facebook advertisement and misled into transferring funds over a period of nearly four weeks.

Kuala Terengganu District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, confirmed the victim was enticed on 24 August after coming across a social media advertisement promoting a lucrative stock investment opportunity.

“The victim clicked the link on the ad and was subsequently added to a WhatsApp group, where an individual identifying herself as ‘Mazlinna’ posed as an investment coach,” he said.

According to police, the victim was instructed to transfer money to several bank accounts under the pretext of participating in the scheme. Over the course of 24 August to 18 September, the retiree made multiple payments amounting to RM76,740.

“No profits were received. Instead, the victim was repeatedly urged to top up his investment in exchange for promises of multiplied returns,” Azli said.

The victim eventually grew suspicious and filed a police report at 2.47pm on 19 September. It was confirmed that the entire amount lost came from his personal savings.

The case is now under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property. - September 20, 2025
