A 70-YEAR-OLD retired civil servant in Kuala Terengganu has been defrauded of more than RM75,000 after falling victim to an elaborate phone scam, authorities reported
Assistant Commissioner Azli Mohd Noor, the district police chief, said the victim lodged a report at the Kuala Terengganu police station yesterday, detailing how she was deceived by a syndicate posing as insurance agents and police officers.
According to Azli, the scam began in mid-June last year when the perpetrators contacted the woman, claiming she was implicated in criminal activity and faced imminent arrest.
"Fearing the threats, the victim followed the instructions given by the syndicate," he said.
"To deny the alleged offences, she was persuaded to make payments into 19 different accounts between June 12 and September 21 last year. As a result, she suffered a loss of RM76,113."
Azli confirmed that the case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, and that the funds lost were the victim’s personal savings. - March 7, 2026
