Retiree, 70, loses RM646,000 in fake online share investment scam

A 70-YEAR-OLD retired woman lost RM646,000 after falling victim to an online investment scam involving non-existent shares and promised returns of up to 12 per cent, police said.

Brickfields district police chief Assistant Commissioner Hoo Chang Hook said the woman made 12 transactions into three separate bank accounts after responding to an investment offer and contacting a WhatsApp group administrator.

Police received a report on the case in Sri Petaling on Wednesday.

Hoo said the victim, a retired company employee, attempted to withdraw the promised profits, which were between eight and 12 per cent, but was told to make additional payments.

She subsequently sought advice from her bank and was informed that the investment was fraudulent before lodging a police report, he said.

An investigation paper has been opened under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

Hoo said police had recorded the complainant’s statement and obtained payment documents to assist the investigation. - October 16, 2026
