A 61-year-old woman lost RM108,000 in a fake online share investment scheme after being lured by promises of 80% returns.

PONTIAN: A retired woman has lost RM108,000 to a fraudulent online share investment scheme.

Pontian district police chief Supt Hadzrat Hussien Mion Hussain said the 61-year-old victim was dealing with an individual offering an investment package from a company.

The suspect promised returns of 80% on the investment amount.

“Attracted by the offer, the victim made several transactions into a company account from March 11 until last Friday, totalling RM108,000,” he said in a statement.

The victim grew suspicious when asked for additional payments to withdraw profits displayed on the application.

She subsequently lodged a police report yesterday.

Hadzrat Hussien explained the syndicate’s modus operandi began by adding the victim to a WhatsApp group.

In the group, accomplices posed as new investors joining the scheme.

Conversations only explained investment procedures, and the victim was later persuaded to join.

This persuasion followed false testimonials from syndicate members claiming to have received multiple-fold returns.
