A RETIREE from Miri has been defrauded of over RM2.5 million in an elaborate online investment scam, Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mancha Ata confirmed on Sunday.
The man, in his 60s, lodged a police report after discovering that no returns had been received despite transferring large sums into a bank account provided by a suspect.
According to police, the victim came across a promotional advertisement on Facebook in mid-April and was subsequently instructed to download an investment application. Over time, he made multiple transactions, amounting to more than RM2.5 million, before realising he had been deceived.
“The victim made multiple transactions totalling over RM2.5 million before realising he had been scammed,” Mancha said in a statement.
He reminded members of the public to remain vigilant when presented with online investment offers and urged them to conduct thorough background checks on individuals or platforms before proceeding.
“It is advisable to verify the legitimacy of investment companies or websites through Bank Negara Malaysia at [www.bnm.gov.my](http://www.bnm.gov.my) or by contacting BNM Telelink at 1-300 885 465, and also through the Securities Commission at [www.sc.com.my](http://www.sc.com.my) or 03-6204 8999,” he added, - August 24, 2025
