Reveal drainage maintenance contractors: Darell tells government

Kota Kinabalu: Parti Warisan Deputy President Datuk Darell Leiking called for a review of all drainage maintenance contracts to see if contractors are doing their job and for transparency and accountability.

“The Government must tell us (and taxpayers) who these contractors are,” he said, referring to recurring flash floods in Penampang, Putatan, Sepanggar and Kota Kinabalu which he blamed on inadequate drainage maintenance and inspection.

Advertisement (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});“Just look at the monsoon drain in Penampang and Kota Kinabalu. The water is stagnant to the point that it is black and smelly,” he said in a statement, Sunday.

He said aquatic vegetation, debris and soil are resulting in flash floods after less than an hour of heavy rain at Lido and Bundusan.

“Imagine the degradation of buildings such as houses when the internal structures of pillars, floorings or walls continuously being inundated in flood water for a couple of days. The loss may not be immediate. But when rust or termites take over, it will be enormous,” he said, adding the GRS-led State Government cannot continue using heavier rainfall or high tide as an excuse for the flash floods.
