Liverpool made an attempt for Raheem Sterling before his commitment to Chelsea.

The Manchester City attacker is set to move to Chelsea for £45m.

The Mirror says Sterling's old club Liverpool were also in the hunt.

Sterling joined Liverpool from QPR aged 14 and burst onto the scene as a 17-year-old as part of the impressive attack that included Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge.

Reds supporters were furious when the star left Anfield for City back in 2015 after he forced through a £50m exit.

He has always endured a hot reception from the Kop since as the rivalry between the two clubs intensified over recent years.

And it's claimed Liverpool made an enquiry for Sterling as it become apparent City were ready to sell.
