REVENGE and a debt dispute may have fuelled the fatal shooting of Malaysian trader Mohd Fuad Fahmie Ghazali, 33, at his home in Sungai Golok, Thailand, last Saturday, according to Thai police sources.
Investigators are probing whether the killing was an act of retaliation by a 31-year-old former Kelantan footballer who had previously suffered severe injuries after allegedly being slashed by the victim four months earlier.
“The incident happened four months ago and following the incident, the suspect was warded at Sungai Golok Hospital. He remained in the intensive care unit for almost a month,” a police source told the New Straits Times.
The source said the suspect sustained serious head and hand injuries in that earlier confrontation and was in a coma for nearly a month.
“They are investigating whether the old grudge from the previous slashing incident was the reason behind the suspect's violent retaliation,” the official added.
The victim’s pregnant wife, Wan Fatihah Mat Husin, 35, described the shooting as merciless, recounting how the gunman continued firing even after her husband had fallen.
“I saw him collapse and immediately held him in my arms, but the shooter kept firing until the gun was empty,” she said.
According to hospital examinations, Mohd Fuad sustained 18 gunshot wounds. Wan Fatihah claimed the attack was carried out by two assailants.
Investigators also believe the fatal confrontation may have arisen from a debt collection attempt. “The attack at the victim's home in Sungai Golok town is believed to have occurred when the suspect tried to collect a debt,” the source said.
The suspect surrendered to Thai police on Sunday evening and was detained along with two seized pistols. Authorities are now searching for his younger brother to assist with the murder investigation.
“Efforts are under way, including along the border area, to locate the brother,” the source added. -November 5, 2025
