The Vigilance Bureau (VB) caught a Kanungo (land record official) red-handed while accepting a bribe of Rs 40,000 in Faridkot, VB officials confirmed on Tuesday.

The accused, identified as Resham Singh, was arrested following a complaint filed by a local resident, Gurcharan Singh.

According to VB officials, the complainant alleged the accused official had demanded a total bribe of Rs 80,000 in exchange for executing a court order to hand over possession of a piece of land.

After negotiation, the deal was struck at Rs 40,000. The VB laid a trap based on the complaint and apprehended the official at the spot just as the money changed hands.

A case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused at the Vigilance Bureau police station.
