Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will carry out a review of customer deposit beginning Feb 1, to ensure the rates are in line with current electricity consumption.

Senior General Manager (Asset Management) Idris Mohd Noor said the study must be implemented in accordance with the regulations enshrined in the Electricity Supply Act 1990.

“The implementation of the user deposit review is done every six months and the need for this review is to ensure that all SESB customers are charged a deposit or security deposit based on their respective electricity consumption,” he said in a statement, Thursday.

He said a total of 80,163 registered users would be involved in the review of their deposits.

According to him, if the average two-month electricity bill is more than the existing deposit, the customer will be asked by SESB to pay additional deposit and the additional amount will depend on their respective electricity consumption.

Collateral/deposit is a guarantee for any liability, if any, or outstanding bill debt when the user terminates the contract.

The calculation of the collateral amount is done automatically through the billing system.

“SESB informs all registered customers that they need to pay a deposit based on an estimated two months of electricity consumption and that it is not an additional or hidden charge.

“However, if usage decreases and the amount of collateral exceeds two months of average usage, then the user has the option to recover the remaining excess collateral by making an application to SESB.

The collateral is owned by the customer which will be returned when the account is closed or when the customer changes the account.

If a registered customer dies, the customer's next of kin can claim a refund of the security deposit by forwarding a bond release form or a court letter together with the customer's death certificate registered at the SESB Office at the address shown on the front of the bill.

SESB customers can visit the SESB website at www.sesb.com.my if they want to know more about the security deposit, or contact SESB Careline 15454, 088-515000 or through the WhatsApp application at 019-852 5427.http://sesb.com.my
