SANDAKAN: Schools have been urged to review the allowances they provide to students in events outside the district.

Taren Sunil Manoharan voiced disappointment over the meagre allowances for three students who were selected to represent the District at the ongoing state-level MSS Sabah Tennis Tournament that began in Kota Kinabalu, Tuesday. “I was in disbelief when I found out what the school contributed to support their three students in the tournament,” he said.

“Having your students selected to represent your district is a matter of pride for your school.

“We had anticipated that they would receive appropriate financial support to help cover at least a reasonable percentage of their expenses during the tournament but it wasn’t the case,” he said.

He said a daily allowance of RM5 per student for food is unrealistic, as even a single meal at a school canteen would probably cost more.

“Furthermore, it is impossible to find suitable accommodation in Kota Kinabalu for RM150 for three persons over a period of five days.”

He said this did not take into account travel expenses for the children which were borne by the parents.
