Review parking enforcement, LDP tells DBKK

Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) Vice-President David Ong (pic) has urged City Hall (DBKK) to review its parking enforcement after a motorist was reportedly issued a RM30 compound despite paying just 51 seconds later.

Describing the compound as “harsh, inconsiderate and totally disproportionate”, Ong said repeated public complaints about the parking system appeared to have fallen on deaf ears.

“When people repeatedly raise reasonable concerns but the authorities refuse to listen and continue imposing rigid and excessive punishment, this begins to look like tyranny, not good city governance,” he said in a statement on Tuesday.

Ong said DBKK should distinguish deliberate non-payment from genuine lapses by introducing a reasonable grace period, proportionate penalties for minor overstays and an easier way for motorists to rectify them.

He also proposed a 30-minute Green Zone option for brief stops, saying: “Rules must be enforced, but enforcement without fairness, reasonable discretion and common sense can easily become oppression.”
