BEAUFORT: Institute of Development Studies (IDS) Sabah Chairman Datuk Azizah Mohd Dun has called for a review of the Tenom-Pangi Hydroelectric Power Plant’s operations following repeated floods in the district.
She said the situation has become untenable, as every time there is prolonged heavy rain, floodgates at the plant are opened, causing the Padas River to overflow and inundate low-lying areas in Beaufort.
“When this happens, residents suffer and are forced to evacuate repeatedly. The mental and physical toll on the people is growing.

She commended frontline agencies including the police, Fire and Rescue Department, Civil Defence Force (APM), and RELA, who worked tirelessly to assist flood victims, alongside the Health Ministry and Sabah Welfare Department.
“They are constantly on standby, preparing rescue logistics out of concern for the safety of residents, while also equipping temporary evacuation centres (PPS) with necessary facilities,” she said.
